⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Winry Rockbell
Age: 16
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga)
Canon Point: Chapter 84

Background: Here!

Personality: Winry is a mechanic through and through, first and foremost. She’s been raised primarily by her grandmother, a well-known automail mechanic, and grew up assisting her with her work. She loves tools and automail and all other technology, always interested in finding out how things work and how they can be improved. She openly fawns over the work of other automail mechanics, wanting to collect all the tips and knowledge that she can to make her own work the best. Winry is very much a prodigy in her own right, as she creates her very first set of automail when she is ten years old for Edward, and she remains his sole mechanic, the only one he turns to when he needs repairs made. She is very dedicated to her work, willing to travel to Ed’s location when he needs her and can’t travel himself, and also to return immediately to Rush Valley when she hears her customers need her to come back.

A lot of her dedication comes from the fact that through her work she is able to help people; to grant them greater mobility and a better state of life. Her parents were surgeons dedicated to helping people, so much so that they risked their lives during the Ishval Civil War to do so. Winry is greatly affected by and influenced by her parents’ sacrifice and wants to live up to their memory. After her failure to take revenge on Scar for killing her parents, during their very next meeting she bandages his arm, telling him that even though she would never forgive him that this is what her parents would have done. She is, at her heart, a healer, and that means helping whoever needs her skills, whether she feels they deserve it or not.

Winry, for the most part, wears her emotions on her sleeves. It’s never hard to guess how she’s feeling because it will show on her face, plus she is very vocal, especially when angry, and has no trouble saying how she feels. In fact she can be rather blunt and doesn't shy away from saying things even if she knows the other person doesn't want to hear it. There is perhaps one exception to this, she has a tendency to try and mask her worry and upset from the Elric brothers so as not to be a burden on them. Especially during the first part of the series, she’s used to the brothers trying to keep things from her, particularly the many dangers they face, so has not to worry her. This causes her to try and act up beat, even when she isn’t feeling that way. Also, she has a fierce temper and isn’t afraid to come at guys three times her size wielding her wrench when they bother or annoy her. But most of the time her ire is directed at Ed.

She is also a very empathetic person and has been shown to shed tears, especially for people she knows won't cry for themselves. She refuses to feel weak for showing her emotions so openly and often allows them to rule her actions, which can have both good and negative consequences. When she pulls a gun on Scar it is out of pure anger and misery for her parents, but at the same time she can't bring herself to pull the trigger because it isn't in her to take a life. That isn't the type of person she wants to be. She also carries a lot of sadness and guilt over not being able to do enough to help the Elric brothers, which is part of the reason she throws herself so passionately into repairing Ed's automail, because she feels it's the one thing she can do for them besides providing a safe place for them in Resembool.

Being a very caring person, once Winry has attached herself to someone she sticks. She’ll worry about their wellbeing and try to help them however she can. When Ed tries to tell her and Pinako to leave the country just in case Ed and Al fail against Father, Winry adamantly refuses, saying that she’s going to stay and help anyway she can, despite realistically there being little she could do at that point. But she’s not willing to just abandon her friends either. She also shows her tendency to stick by those she cares for with the Hughes’. After she finds out about Maes’ death she spends time with Gracia and Elicia, who have become like a surrogate family to her.

Abilities: Winry is just a normal human with no supernatural abilities whatsoever. But she is a very skilled and experienced mechanic who has a focus on building and repairing automail, special steel-based prostheses in the FMA world. She builds and repairs Ed’s automail limbs numerous times over the course of the series. She also has surgical knowledge from growing up with two surgeon parents, a skill that helps her during the series, such as when Ed first needs the automail sockets to be surgically attached to him (even though she’s only assisting her grandmother at the time), and also when she has no choice but to help a woman give birth when they are all trapped together during a blizzard.

Alignment: Daimonia. Grief and joy is a dichotomy that suits Winry well because she is a naturally joyful and happy person, but she also has a lot of grief in her heart. The death of her parents is still something that haunts her as well as influences her, and she often hides her sadness and grief from the Elric brothers because she doesn’t want to become another burden on their shoulders. So in a way Winry is frequently balancing between these two emotions throughout the series. They’re not her only emotions, of course, but they are the ones I think most impact Winry as a person.
